S.M.A.A. History

In 1947, a dedicated group of community volunteers working with local youth recognized the value of collaboration, mutual support, and organized athletic programming. Through their combined efforts, the Sarnia Minor Athletic Association (S.M.A.A.) was established to provide structured sport opportunities for minor-aged participants throughout the Sarnia area.

In 1948, Sarnia City Council acknowledged the positive impact that organized minor sports programs were having on the community and its youth. As a result, the City agreed to provide financial assistance in support of the Association’s programs and initiatives.

In 1949, the establishment of a Recreation Commission and the appointment of a Recreation Director further strengthened community recreation efforts. An affiliation was formed between the Commission and the S.M.A.A., creating a partnership that continues to support local youth athletics today.

On May 12, 1975, the S.M.A.A. officially became incorporated through Letters Patent and adopted a Constitution and Bylaws to guide the governance and operation of the Association.

Since 2022, the S.M.A.A. has operated as a non-profit organization, continuing its longstanding commitment to providing quality recreational and athletic opportunities for youth in the community.
